Dated to the early Middle Ages, this Byzantine bronze cross pendant takes the form of a Greek cross (crux quadrata), defined by four cylindrical arms of equal length intersecting at right angles, each terminating in subtly carved ends. The piece is modest in both scale and manufacture, suggesting it was worn by an individual of ordinary means. Its greenish-orange patina bears witness to its considerable age.
