Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century AD. A bronze cross pendant of sturdy columnar form with distinctive knop-and-reel terminals at the end of each arm, giving the piece a bold architectural silhouette characteristic of medieval Byzantine devotional jewelry. The cross is cast in the round with each arm modelled as a turned shaft with ringed collars and swelling finials, converging at a raised central boss decorated with an incised lozenge or diamond motif. An integral suspension loop at the top allowed it to be worn around the neck as a personal devotional object.

Bronze crosses such as this were widely worn throughout the Byzantine world as expressions of Christian faith and spiritual protection, serving as both everyday jewelry and intimate objects of devotion. The columnar, almost architectonic treatment of the arms on this example is particularly evocative of Byzantine decorative vocabulary, echoing the turned columns and ornamental forms found in the ecclesiastical architecture and liturgical arts of the period.
