Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant
Weight: 6.18 g
Length: 3.3 cm / 1.29 in
Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century AD. A bronze cross pendant of compact, sturdy form, each arm modelled with a pronounced series of stacked rings or ribs terminating in flat disc-like finials, meeting at a raised square central boss incised with a diagonal cross pattern. An integral suspension loop at the top allowed it to be worn as a personal devotional object.
The surface retains a warm grey-brown patina with subtle bronze tones emerging on the higher relief, giving the piece a solid, well-preserved appearance. The repetitive ribbed articulation of the arms lends the cross a distinctive rhythmic quality, while the boldly incised central boss adds a sharp geometric accent to the overall form.
Bronze crosses such as this were widely worn throughout the Byzantine world as expressions of Christian faith and spiritual protection, serving as both everyday jewelry and intimate objects of devotion.
