Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century AD. A Byzantine silver monogram ring with a square bezel engraved with an intricate design composed of intersecting letters arranged around a central axis. The bezel is slightly raised above a slender rounded hoop, its simple form placing emphasis on the engraved monogram.
Monograms occupied an important place in Byzantine visual culture and appeared on rings, seals, coins, manuscripts, church furnishings, and official documents. Rather than spelling out a name conventionally, letters were interwoven into highly stylized arrangements that transformed writing into a symbolic mark of authority and status.
Rings of this type often functioned as signet rings, used to seal documents or goods in wax or clay. The engraved monogram therefore served not only as decoration, but also as a personal mark of identity and authority.
