A finely crafted Hellenistic gold pendant dating to circa 300 BC, formed as a miniature amphora of elegant proportions and exceptional ornamental refinement. The vessel-shaped pendant features a compressed ovoid body rising from a small circular foot, while the lower section is enriched with delicate gadrooned fluting that recalls the metalwork and ceramic traditions of the late Classical and early Hellenistic world.

The amphora is furnished with graceful opposed volute handles executed in fine gold wire, lending the piece a sense of lightness and sophistication. Above, the neck broadens into an everted lip bordered by a carefully worked beaded moulding, surmounted by a flat lid. A ribbed tubular suspension loop projects from the top, allowing the pendant to be worn while harmoniously integrating into the vessel’s overall architectural form.

Miniature amphora pendants of this type were prized in the Hellenistic period both as luxurious personal adornments and as objects imbued with symbolic significance. The amphora itself was closely associated with wine, ritual libation, abundance, and the symposium culture that permeated elite Mediterranean society. Such pendants may also have functioned as amuletic containers for perfumes, oils, or other precious substances, combining decorative beauty with intimate personal use.

The refined detailing, balanced symmetry, and sculptural handling of the goldwork reflect the technical sophistication achieved by Hellenistic jewellers in the centuries following Alexander the Great. Small in scale yet highly expressive, this pendant embodies the fusion of practicality, symbolism, and artistic elegance characteristic of luxury jewellery from the Hellenistic Mediterranean world.
