Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant
Weight: 5.19 g
Length: 3.4 cm / 1.33 in
Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century AD. A Byzantine bronze cross pendant of restrained geometric form, composed of four tapering cylindrical arms extending from a raised central boss decorated with an incised saltire motif. The cross follows the traditional Greek cross arrangement, with arms of nearly equal length and a small suspension loop above for wearing.
The pendant retains an attractive green patina across the surface, with light areas of encrustation consistent with age. Its simple but carefully balanced construction reflects the Byzantine preference for symbolic forms rendered through clean lines and modest ornamentation.
Crosses of this kind were worn throughout the Byzantine world as personal devotional objects and protective amulets. Though modest in material, they carried deep religious significance and formed part of the everyday spiritual life of medieval Christians across the Eastern Mediterranean.
