This Byzantine bronze pendant cross is dated to the 11th–13th centuries AD. The form is that of a Greek Cross (crux quadrata), with four arms of equal length intersecting at right angles to create a balanced, symmetrical design.
The terminals of each arm are pommelled, a feature often interpreted as stylised “eyes.” In Byzantine material culture, such motifs are commonly associated with apotropaic functions, intended to ward off harm and protect the wearer from the evil eye.
