Byzantine Bronze Cross Pendant
Weight: 6.18 g
Length: 4.3 cm / 1.69 in
Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century AD. A bronze cross pendant of broad, flaring form with slightly expanded terminals and an integral suspension loop above. The face is decorated with incised linear borders and geometric motifs, including a central circular element and stylized panels within each arm, giving the piece a distinctly architectural appearance characteristic of middle Byzantine devotional metalwork.
The cross retains an attractive dark green and olive patina with lighter earthen deposits settled into the recessed decoration, emphasizing the engraved details. Though modest in material, pendants such as this served as deeply personal expressions of faith, worn daily as protective devotional objects throughout the Byzantine world.
Its balanced proportions and restrained ornament reflect the Byzantine preference for symbolic clarity and durable craftsmanship in objects intended for both spiritual and everyday use.
